Ingrid Bugge (1968-2020), "Romeo and Juliet" (2013)

How do you capture the dramatic movement of ballet in a static image?
It´s a question which has challenged artists for centuries.

Ingrid Bugge promises to pull you into her world of fascination...

Romeo and Juliet
Music by Sergei Prokofiev

Shakespeare´s enduring romantic tragedy:

Against a sumtuous setting in Renaissance Italy, the choreographer weaves a dance tapestry rich in character nuance and sensuality, and Sergei Prokofiev´s instantly recognizable music underscores the lyric beauty and passion of this beloved ballet´s star-crossed lovers.

Prokofiev´s music brings alive the world of ancient Italy with beauty, drama and passion.

She uses a mixture of digital technology and Renaissance
inspired painting to bring to life the ethereal world of ballet in her book:

Her beautiful haunting photographs...

Ingrid Bugge´s artistic practice aims to examine the world and its essentials.

She looks at the immediate and superficial and then goes beyond, in search of the inherent story and poetry.

Ingrid Bugge, "The Essence of Ballet"

Following the Royal Danish Ballet for two years, Bugge got under the skin of the dancers.

Her work displays their challenges, victories, and the stories they tell with their bodies.

The project aims to capture and condense moments from performances and reveal the essence of ballet.

Ingrid Bugge

Referencing the teccniques of the refined renaissance painters, she is able to manipulate light and darkness to produce work with a sensual, dream-like feeling.

By editing the photographs with digital tools, she approaches them as digital paintings, using light, texture, materiality, space, movement and form in order to reveal the essence of her chosen subject.

The exploration of the world happens through the lens of the camera, out to digital edition, and on a beautiful canvas, cotton paper, or poster print.

Ingrid Bugge takes you in with her rare, beautiful shots of body and nature:

"The human body, movement and the personal, subjectiv story are my artistic passions.
I mirror what I see and thus I must feel and understand before creating my own interpretations.
In my art projects, I always start by examining the subject -the scientific subject as well as the subjectiv and personal subject-.
I collect motifs and textures with my camera:
In Phoposhop I work with different colour schemes and play with textures and motifs creating my own visual universe in my photographic collages",
she says.
